What is the champion?

Also called internal champion.

The champion is the person inside a buying account who already wants you to win and sits every day in the rooms where the decision is actually made, so in a committee sale the highest-leverage move is often to arm that person rather than to have another conversation with the decision-maker.

The champion matters because a considered B2B purchase does not move because one important person said yes. The moment it gets real, a committee forms, and the deal has to survive two independent vetoes: the people who will live with the tool, whose veto in a technical sale is absolute, and whoever guards the money, whose veto is just as final. You get thirty minutes on a call. The champion is in that company every day, where the decision actually happens, and the only way you reach those rooms is through what you hand them first.

Ammunition is not a brochure. It is three specific things the system already produces. A signal profile of the champion's own environment, the roles they are hiring, the tools their teams are evaluating, the activity that shows the problem is live, so they argue from facts the committee can verify. A comparison against the alternatives the committee is actually weighing. And a copy-paste ROI block in the language they will use upstairs, framed as the headcount they do not have to hire, because the CFO is comparing you to a hire, not to other vendors. You are writing all of it for the champion to forward, not to admire. If it needs you in the room to make sense, it is a leave-behind, and leave-behinds lose committees.

The champion also needs a reason to act now, since a committee can agree a purchase makes sense and still do nothing for two quarters. The same signals that moved the account up the readiness axis, a security incident, a funding round, a senior hire with a mandate, become the argument for why this cannot wait. We learned this losing deals where our champion was on our side and had nothing to answer a competing narrative with.
