What is Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)?

Also called MQL, marketing-qualified lead.

A Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL) is a contact that marketing has judged ready to hand to sales, usually because a lead score built from engagement, such as email opens, content downloads or pricing-page visits, has crossed a threshold the two teams agreed on in advance.

The Marketing Qualified Lead was a good idea when SiriusDecisions introduced the Demand Waterfall in 2006. Data was thin, enrichment slow and expensive, account context almost impossible to maintain at scale, so teams compressed several questions into one operational stage, and the habit outlived the constraints. In the Demand Compass we treat the MQL as one bucket holding four different things: account fit, contact relevance, engagement, and buying readiness. Four questions, four realities, mixed into one score and handed to sales as if they were the same thing. We call that the MQL Collapse.

The most expensive part of the collapse is treating brand awareness and buying readiness as a single axis. Awareness you build, with content and repetition until it sticks. Readiness you cannot build; you can only see it sooner. A score that adds the two together cannot tell a rep what to do next, which is why a CMO told us her team was spamming people who were not ready while a VP of Sales, from the other side of the same wall, said his reps would not touch hundreds of qualified leads sitting in the CRM.

Northwind, a composite of the cyber deployments we have run, had 3,200 engaged contacts that sales would not work. Scored against signals that something was happening inside the account, 41 of those accounts were actually in-market that quarter, nine became real opportunities, and three would never have been touched under the old list.

The MQL still works in the narrow case it was built for: a single identifiable buyer, a short cycle, and a channel where intent shows up on a form. It stops being precise the moment the buyer goes quiet, the committee forms, and the signal moves into the dark.
